RCD spur units from GreenBrook will be part of a refurbishment designed to maintain the very highest standards of infection control at Cwm Taf Local Health Board’s Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.  The company’s IP67 waterproof RCD spur units are being installed in 12 refurbished wards at the hospital to isolate and protect the electrical circuitry for all the wards’ infra-red operated taps.

Main contractor, Wilmott Dixon, is carrying out the multi million refurbishment programme, due for completion in May 2012.  Electrical contractor Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions (BBUS) specified GreenBrook RCD spur units to match the consultant’s requirements.

Explains Bryan Appleby, project manager for BBUS: “Infection control is an important consideration in any hospital refurbishment programme and the installation of infra-red activated taps which switch on with motion sensors is a simple but effective way of reducing the risk of passing on infection as no-one needs to touch a tap to wash their hands.  By installing waterproof RCD spurs as part of the infra-red tap installation we can ensure that patients and staff are protected from the risk of live current as well as from infection.”

Designed to withstand extreme environments involving dirt or fluid contaminants, GreenBrook’s IP67 RCD spur units are housed in a tough polycarbonate enclosure to ensure that they are durable as well as waterproof.  The units are designed to trip at 30mA of current, cutting the electrical supply within 40mS to ensure users are always well-protected.

BBUS will install 17 GreenBrook IP67 RCD spur units in each of the 12 refurbished wards to serve taps for general handwashing and patient use and those in the patient examination booths.
