regis schoolAward-winning building controls specialists BG Controls has installed a brand new Building Management System (BMS) in ‘The Regis School’ to optimise energy efficiency.

The £39 million Building Schools for the Future (BSF) development includes a complete reconstruction of Bognor Regis Community College, bringing the building up-to-date with all the latest eco-friendly technologies.

The new building has over 400 rooms all of which are specially designed to provide an ideal environment for learning. As well as being a secure school with controlled access and exit points, the system assures that every room has suitable heating and ventilation. Facilities for the school’s 1,800 pupils include a comprehensive library and catering area with 25 metre high windows that allow natural ventilation, state-of-the-art fitness suite, lecture theatre, dance and drama studios, a purpose built gym and main hall with HD performance space.

BG Controls has installed the BMS which monitors and controls technologies such as natural ventilation, biomass boilers, gas boilers and air-handling units to maximise energy efficiency.

BG faced the difficult task of having to build a control panel, which needed to be placed on a 3m x 3m concrete base on top of the school. To overcome this issue, BG came up with a solution to build a ‘U’ shaped panel, as this was the only way that it would fit on the existing base.

The unusually shaped panel was built in BG’s in-house workshop, it had to be vertically wired and fully tested. After completion, the wires were disconnected and all three sections were then taken apart. The panel was then re-assembled and re-tested on site, then carefully lifted by a crane onto the designated base.

“BG Automated Systems has never missed a delivery date,” comments BG’s project manager, Simon Shaw. “Building a panel to fit on such a small, awkwardly positioned base was a particularly challenging as BG has never had to do this before.”
