mottmacdonaldFulcrum Consulting has joined the Mott MacDonald Group in a move to expand the Group’s building design offering, especially in the area of sustainability.

London-based Fulcrum is recognised at industry and government levels as one of the UK’s leading providers of sustainable energy solutions for buildings and the built environment. The company is a founding member of the UK Green Buildings Council and advisor to the UK government’s Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Ed Miliband. It also has a number of policy analysts seconded to the government’s Zero Carbon Hub and is helping deliver the massive step change required to make zero carbon homes a reality by 2016. Director Andy Ford will be CIBSE President in 2011.

Its project portfolio includes a number of ground breaking schemes such as Kingsdale School where Fulcrum designed the first active daylight control ETFE roof, Westway Beacons which incorporates the first UK application of aquifer thermal energy storage and the Natural History Museum's new Darwin Centre Phase 2, on which the company provided specialist and natural lighting, building physics, advice on the external envelope and sustainable low energy design services. Another landmark is the multi-award winning Brighton Library, acknowledged as the first truly sustainable PFI project, where Fulcrum designed all building services and Mott MacDonald was technical advisor.

Fulcrum’s skills and portfolio ideally complement and reinforce Mott MacDonald’s highly successful track record and capabilities in sustainable building design. These range from projects such as the multi-award winning Manchester Civil Justice Centre, widely acclaimed for setting new benchmarks for environmental performance, to development of the construction industry’s first comprehensive whole lifecycle cost and carbon tool for assessing the future performance of entire buildings upfront.

Both companies believe that joining forces will bring benefits to staff and customers alike. Mike Barker, Mott MacDonald Group’s global buildings practice director, believes that Fulcrum is an ideal fit with the Group’s existing skills. “Fulcrum has a tremendous reputation in the building services and sustainability sectors and brings additional skills in energy and sustainability master planning for buildings. Uniting the talent from both our organisations will help us deliver major advances for our clients in the field of sustainable development.”

Richard Shennan, managing director of Fulcrum, is equally enthusiastic about the opportunities that joining the Mott MacDonald Group will bring. “Having direct access to the Group’s global network and resources will enable us to offer our customers a more comprehensive service, drawing on the complementary skills of our colleagues in Mott MacDonald – many of whom we’ve already worked with on various projects. For our staff it will provide opportunities to work across different market sectors on a more diverse range of projects worldwide – along with the benefits of broader career development prospects.”
